Is a standing seam roof worth the extra cost over shingles?

Over a 40-year window, yes — comfortably. Asphalt shingles need to be replaced 2–3 times in the lifespan of one standing seam roof. Add insurance premium reductions, higher resale value and lower attic cooling load and the payback typically sits between years 15 and 20.

Is standing seam noisy in the rain?

No. Modern standing seam is installed over a solid deck with underlayment and, in most cases, existing attic insulation. Interior sound level under heavy rain is comparable to an asphalt roof — nothing like the tin-shed roofs of the past.

Can I put standing seam over my existing shingles?

We do not recommend it. Trapping the old shingles hides deck damage, adds weight, and voids most manufacturer warranties. Tear-off is included in every quote we issue.

Standing seam sheds snow in slabs, which reduces ice damming and structural load. Asphalt holds snow, which means more ice at the eaves and a higher chance of water backing up under the shingles during a mid-winter melt.

4. Warranty

Our standing seam panels are rolled from premium-painted steel with a finish engineered for UV, chalking and colour stability. Specific warranty terms depend on the steel mill and colour selected — full documentation is provided with every quote. Shingle warranties are pro-rated after year 10 and typically pay out cents on the dollar at year 15.

5. Insurance & hail

Standing seam carries a Class A fire rating and a Class 4 impact rating — the highest available. Many Ontario insurers give a premium reduction (typically 5–15%) for a Class 4 roof.

6. Resale value

7. Environmental impact
