Colours & Coatings

Standing seam colours and paint systems

The colour you choose is the roof you see for the next forty years — but the coating you choose is what decides whether it still looks that way in year twenty. Here is the full palette we roll, and how the three paint systems behave in Ontario weather.

PVDF (Kynar 500®) — the architectural standard

A fluoropolymer resin system built for colour retention, chalk resistance and gloss stability. This is what we specify for every dark, deep or metallic tone, and for any roof that faces full southern sun. Each swatch below lists its SRI (Solar Reflectance Index) — higher numbers reflect more solar energy.

SMP Classic — the value workhorse

Silicone-modified polyester gives a harder, more abrasion-resistant film than PVDF at a lower cost. In whites, greys, tans and mid-tones it performs beautifully for decades — ideal for shops, barns, garages and budget-conscious residential work.

Tex Series — textured, low-glare finishes

A fine embossed texture that scatters light, dramatically reducing visible oil canning and eliminating the mirror-glare of a smooth dark panel. Increasingly the default on modern black and graphite roofs.

How to choose a colour that still looks right in ten years

  • Start from the permanent materials. Brick, stone and window frames are not changing. Pick the roof against those, not against the current paint colour.
  • Judge on a physical chip, outdoors. Hold it at roof angle in daylight. Metallics and dark tones photograph and render on screens very differently from reality.
  • Go one shade lighter than you think. A large roof plane reads darker and more saturated than a small chip.
  • Consider texture for dark colours. On broad, flat planes a textured or matte finish hides panel waviness far better than high gloss.
  • Match the trims. We fabricate flashings from the same painted coil, so ridge, rake and valley never read as a different colour.

See it on your own house

Our roof colour visualizer puts any of these finishes onto a photo of your home before you commit, and the panel configurator lets you pair a colour with a mechanical lock or TSS-3000 profile. Free physical colour chips ship anywhere in Ontario — just ask in your quote request.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between PVDF and SMP paint?

PVDF (Kynar 500 / Hylar 5000 resin) holds colour and gloss far longer and is the specification for dark, vivid and metallic finishes. SMP (silicone-modified polyester) is a harder, more scratch-resistant film at a lower cost, and performs very well in light and mid-tone colours.

Do dark metal roofs fade in Ontario?

A PVDF finish is engineered specifically for colour and chalk resistance, which is why we recommend it for black, dark bronze, deep green and any red. Dark tones in cheaper polyester paint are where fading complaints come from.

Does a dark roof make the house hotter?

Less than people expect. Modern coatings use cool-roof pigments that reflect infrared even in dark colours, and standing seam over a ventilated deck dumps heat far better than an asphalt roof of the same colour. The SRI value shown with each colour is the reflectance measure.

Can I get a sample before deciding?

Yes — we send physical colour chips free anywhere in Ontario. Screens misrepresent metallics and dark tones badly, so always confirm on a real chip in daylight, held at roof angle.

Can flashings and trims match the panel colour?

Yes. We fabricate drip edge, rake, ridge, valley and custom trims from the same painted coil as your panels, so the whole roof is one colour batch.
